ERPNext Alternatives for Indian Manufacturers (2026)
ERPNext is free and capable, but India compliance is an add-on, every version has an end-of-life date and planning and procurement stay manual. We compare six realistic alternatives on GST, true cost and upgrade effort, and say when to stay on ERPNext.
If you searched for ERPNext alternatives, you probably chose ERPNext for good reasons: the software is free, the code is open, and the manufacturing module looks complete. Then the project got real: GST compliance sits in a separate app, every major version has an end-of-life date, and somebody has to keep it all running. Or the ERP works fine, and your buyer still raises every purchase order by hand.
This guide compares six realistic options for Indian manufacturers in 2026 on GST compliance, true cost and upgrade effort. It also says when you should stay on ERPNext, and what to ask any vendor before you commit.
Why Indian manufacturers look past ERPNext
ERPNext is a serious product with an active community, and Frappe shipped version 16.50 on 7 October 2026. Its manufacturing feature list includes multi-level bills of materials, production planning, work orders with job cards, subcontracting and quality checks. The reasons to look elsewhere are rarely missing features:
- India compliance is an add-on. GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills, TDS and TCS come from the optional India Compliance app, and the documentation says available features depend on the app version, the ERPNext version and your configuration.
- Every version has an end-of-life date. Frappe's supported versions page lists version 14 as ended on 31 January 2026, with version 15 planned to end in 2027 and version 16 in 2029. Its warranty covers only listed versions and needs a Frappe Cloud support plan.
- Upgrades are your project. Version 16.50 introduced a new desktop and navigation, and Frappe says a future version 17 would include breaking changes. Customised and self-hosted setups carry that work.
- Planning depth needs testing. The documentation lists production planning but gives no detail on how deep it goes. Ask to see your routings, job work and multi-plant planning on your own data.
- AI comes from add-ons. Frappe's version 16.50 announcement doesn't mention AI, and the assistants that turn up for ERPNext are third-party apps, such as an open-source Copilot described on the Frappe forum.
What ERPNext really costs
The software is free. ERPNext is released under the GPL-3.0 licence, and Frappe Cloud lists hosting from ₹410 a month for a single site and ₹3,600 a month for a server, priced per site or server rather than per user.
That is a fraction of Odoo's per-user licence or Likwid's Cloud plan, which is why ERPNext so often makes the first shortlist. The cost that matters sits around the software: an implementation partner, customisation, training and upgrades. Frappe's warranty covers bug fixes, not functional support.
Frappe says most small businesses go live in two to eight weeks, but that is a vendor claim. Ask for a reference from a manufacturer of your size and complexity.
The 6 ERPNext alternatives worth shortlisting
"Alternative" means different things here. Odoo is the nearest like-for-like, SAP Business One and Business Central are the established mid-market names, TallyPrime is the accounting-first route, and Likwid takes a different approach: an ERP with agents that do the procurement work. A sixth option is to keep ERPNext and fix the gap around it.
| Option | Best for | Strength | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Odoo | Teams that want a bigger app ecosystem | Open-source Community edition; wide app range; India GST modules | Enterprise is priced per user; India setup needs a GSP and NIC credentials |
| SAP Business One | Firms that want an established partner network | SAP reports 50 localisations and 850+ partners | Production depth often depends on add-ons and your partner |
| Dynamics 365 Business Central | Microsoft-centred companies | BOMs, routings and production orders | Manufacturing needs the Premium tier; confirm GST e-invoice submission |
| TallyPrime | Accounting-first firms with simple production | Familiar; BOMs, manufacturing journals, job work | Records transactions; doesn't plan or buy for you |
| Likwid ERP | Plants where procurement and planning are manual | AI agents for RFQs, quotes, POs and vendor follow-ups; free self-hosted plan | Newer vendor; Cloud costs far more per user than ERPNext |
| ERPNext plus a layer | Companies already on ERPNext | Keep your data and workflows | Integration must be scoped; two vendors |
1. Odoo: the nearest like-for-like
Odoo covers the same ground, and its manufacturing page lists bills of materials, a master production schedule, a shop floor dashboard, quality checks, lot and serial traceability, and finite-capacity scheduling with a Gantt view. Its editions page describes Community as open source and Enterprise as licensed, and says you can switch between them.
Odoo publishes India prices on its pricing page: on annual billing, Standard is Rs 725 per user per month and Custom is Rs 1,350, before an introductory discount of about 20%. Check the page before you budget, because that is a licence cost ERPNext doesn't have.
For India, Odoo's documentation describes separate modules for GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills and returns, and calls for a GSTIN, a GSP connection and API credentials from the NIC portals. That is comparable to ERPNext's add-on approach, so neither is plug and play.
2. SAP Business One: the established name
SAP positions Business One as ERP for small and midsize companies. SAP's newsroom reports 50 country-specific localisations and more than 850 partners, which matters for local support.
Indian partners describe coverage for GST, e-invoicing and e-way bills, but production depth often comes from add-ons and partner configuration. Ask the partner for a timeline in writing, and for who keeps the GST localisation current when the rules change.
3. Dynamics 365 Business Central: the Microsoft route
Business Central models production with BOMs, routings, work and machine centres and production orders, according to Microsoft's manufacturing documentation. The same page says those features are available only with the Premium experience.
For India, Microsoft Learn documents GST e-invoice generation as a JSON export from posted invoices. In your demo, check whether the invoice is submitted to the Invoice Registration Portal automatically, or whether that step needs a partner extension.
4. TallyPrime: stay with Tally, with manufacturing switched on
Tally's manufacturing page describes multi-level BOMs, and its guide for small manufacturers covers job costing and job work with GST e-way bills. If you are an accounting-first business with a simple production flow, that may be enough.
Tally records what happened. It doesn't run a planning engine or raise purchase orders for you. Read how accounting software for manufacturing businesses differs from an ERP.
5. Likwid ERP: agents that do the buying
Likwid is our own platform, so weigh this section accordingly. It has Rise (CRM and sales), Flow (inventory and orders) and Spout (production and planning) modules, and publishes its source code on GitHub. On top of that, AI agents raise RFQs, rank quotes, draft purchase orders and chase vendors over email and voice.
The pricing page has three tiers: a free self-hosted plan, Cloud at ₹2,700 per user per month as a standard product with no customisation, and Enterprise from ₹49,999 a month for unlimited users plus a one-time implementation from ₹5 lakh.
Be clear about the trade-offs. Next to ERPNext's near-zero licence cost, Likwid Cloud is expensive per user, and ERPNext has a far larger community. Likwid fits best where the bottleneck is manual procurement and planning, not the licence fee.
GST invoices, e-way bills and GSTR-ready exports are built in, per our ERP page. Ask every vendor, us included, to generate an e-invoice with an IRN and an e-way bill on your own data. See our comparison of ERP software for Indian manufacturers and the AI-powered ERP for manufacturing.
6. Keep ERPNext and add the missing layer
If ERPNext already runs your accounts and stock, a new ERP may be an expensive fix for a narrow problem. Likwid's agents connect to existing ERPs over APIs, and our named integrations today are SAP, Odoo and Tally, so ask us to scope ERPNext before you plan around it.
Start with AI procurement automation or the wider agentic ERP for manufacturing if procurement is the gap. If it is demand planning, our guide to Kinaxis alternatives compares the planning tools.
Five questions to ask every vendor
- Which version will I run, when does it reach end of life, and who handles the upgrade?
- Can you show an e-invoice with an IRN and an e-way bill, generated on my own data?
- What is the total first-year cost in writing: licence or hosting, implementation, customisation and upgrades?
- Which of my needs, such as batch traceability, job work, multi-level BOMs and several plants, work out of the box and which are custom?
- Can I speak to a manufacturer of my size and industry in India?
Put the same questions to your ERPNext partner. Sector detail matters too, so check how each vendor handles pharmaceuticals, plastics and packaging, food and beverage, nutraceuticals, auto components and heavy machinery.
When you should stay on ERPNext
Stay if you run a supported version, your partner or in-house team is solid, India Compliance already covers your flows, and the near-zero licence cost matters to your margins. In that case, the gap is probably procurement and planning, not the ERP.
Switching ERP is a big project, so be sure the problem is the system and not the process. Our guide to how to choose a manufacturing ERP covers the full checklist. If you are still on spreadsheets rather than ERPNext, start with the path from spreadsheet to ERP.
ERPNext alternatives: common questions
Is ERPNext really free?
The software is: ERPNext is released under the GPL-3.0 licence. You still pay for hosting, implementation, customisation, training and upgrades.
What is the best open-source alternative to ERPNext?
Odoo's Community edition is the nearest, and Odoo describes it as open source. Likwid has a free self-hosted plan with its source on GitHub. Compare the feature lists against your own processes, because the editions differ.
Does ERPNext support GST e-invoicing and e-way bills?
Yes, through the optional India Compliance app, which also covers TDS and TCS. Feature availability depends on the app version, the ERPNext version and your configuration.
Which ERPNext versions are supported?
According to Frappe's supported versions page, version 14 ended on 31 January 2026. Version 15 is planned to end in 2027 and version 16 in 2029.
Can I keep ERPNext and add AI procurement?
Possibly. Likwid's agents connect to existing ERPs over APIs, but ERPNext isn't on our named integration list, so ask us to scope it first.
Conclusion
ERPNext is a capable, free ERP and often the right one. If it isn't working for you, decide whether the problem is the ERP, the version treadmill or the manual work around it. Shortlist a like-for-like ERP, an established partner-led one and a layer that does the procurement work, then ask each for an e-invoice, a first-year quote and a reference on your own data.
